James Bayles


James Bayles currently serves as Senior Vice President, Fiduciary Analyst in the Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOP) Client Services Group, where he works with GreatBanc Trust Company’s General Counsel on legal and compliance issues relating to ESOP transactions and with the Sales Team assisting in the review and management of ESOP Transactions and client relationships.

Mr. Bayles joined GreatBanc in 2017. Prior to joining GreatBanc, Mr. Bayles was a Senior Attorney with Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, where he specialized in employee benefits (ERISA) litigation. During his 10 years there, Mr. Bayles defended high-profile ERISA cases as principal brief and motion writer, manager of expert witnesses and client counsel. Beginning his legal career in 1991, Mr. Bayles’ experience also includes nearly 10 years as a Vedder Price, P.C. Associate.

Mr. Bayles earned a bachelor of arts in economics from the University of Chicago, and a master of business administration from the University of Chicago’s Booth School, where he specialized in business economics and finance. He earned a juris doctor from the University of California’s Boalt Hall School of Law, where he was Associate Editor of The California Law Review. Mr. Bayles is a member of the Illinois Bar and is admitted to practice in numerous federal appellate and district courts.
